Sand Camel Art

The massive Sahara Desert covers the northern third of the continent of Africa.  The camel is uniquely created to not only survive, but thrive in this environment.  In honor of the camel’s natural habitat, we are going to create a camel art project using sand!

Download the camel picture HERE.  Print this on tan or cream-colored card stock.

You will also need:

  • crayons
  • glue
  • a paintbrush
  • craft sand – found at your local craft store; note: this is different from regular sand
  • sequins
  • yarn

Untitled

Color sand, sky, palm trees and blanket with crayons.  Do NOT color the camel.

Untitled

Paint glue onto the camel, avoiding the blanket.  Apply glue liberally!  This is the key.

Untitled

Once your camel is covered with glue, sprinkle sand over the glue.  Lightly pat the sand to the glue.  It may be beneficial to paint glue on a section at a time so that the glue doesn’t dry before you put the sand on it.

Untitled

Untitled

Shake off excess sand onto a paper plate or newspaper.  Bare spots? – add more glue and sand.  Your camel may look a little splotchy, but don’t worry about it!  That’s part of its charm 🙂

Untitled

Paint glue on sand dune lines.

Untitled

Sprinkle sand on glue, and shake of excess as before.

Untitled

Decorate your camel’s blanket with sequins.

Untitled

Finally, glue on reins.

Your sand camel art is complete!  Stand back, admire, and imagine yourself riding this camel in the vast Sahara Desert!
