The Country Alphabet Game is a simple mapping activity that will help orient kids to Latin America. Note that Latin America is not a continent, but rather a REGION that spans North America, Central America and South America. Explorers that first settled the New World in the 15th and 16th centuries came from Spain and Portugal, as a result, Spanish and Portuguese are the primary languages spoken in Latin America.
For this activity, each student will need:
- Map of Latin America, printed on cardstock; one per student
- Central America Reference Map
- South America Reference Map
- Latin America Alphabet Country List
- Colored markers
The object of the game is to progress through the ABC list of countries and find the matching country(ies) that begins with the particular letter. Write that letter on the corresponding country on the Latin America map. Continue working through the alphabet and corresponding countries. To add challenge or competition, make this a timed activity for individual students or teams of students. Winner is the first person/group to label all countries.
